What Is It Like to Live with 5 Cats?

For the first post on our blog, I decided to leave the floor not to myself, but to the true directors of our household.

One of the questions I\'ve been asked most frequently for years is: "What is it like to live with five cats?"

Actually, I\'m not the best person to answer this question. Because there are five cats who share this home with me, make the rules, and are the true owners of the couches: Gece, Maya, Mina Luna, Merlin, and Marla. I asked the questions, they gave the answers. Here is the exclusive interview...

Let's start with the question everyone is curious about. Is it hard to live with five cats at home?

We don't think so. When people hear about five cats, they assume we fight all the time, but in reality, everyone has their own routine and personal space.

If there is proper planning, five cats can live together just as easily as two. It's not about the count, it's about the structure.

So, how does your feeding routine work?

GM Pet Sitter cat manager Merlin - 3D digital illustration
MerlinDirector of Systems

First of all, we are not free-fed.

GM Pet Sitter cat manager Marla - 3D digital illustration
MarlaCreative Director

We do not have a system where our food bowls stay filled all day long.

GM Pet Sitter cat manager Mina Luna - 3D digital illustration
Mina LunaDirector of Communication

Our meal times progress at specific intervals, frequently and on a regular schedule.

MayaDirector of R&D

This way, our health is closely monitored, and everyone knows exactly when it's time to eat.

Also, here is an important point: neither water nor litter boxes are placed next to our feeding areas.

Why?

GM Pet Sitter cat manager Merlin - 3D digital illustration
MerlinDirector of Systems

Because in nature, cats prefer not to drink water right next to their fresh prey.

Mina LunaDirector of Communication

And frankly speaking, nobody wants to eat food right next to their toilet.

What about water?

GM Pet Sitter cat manager Maya - 3D digital illustration
MayaDirector of R&D

We have automatic water fountains running at two different locations in our home.

MerlinDirector of Systems

In addition to that, we have various secondary water stations spread across different rooms.

Every cat might have a different preference. Offering options is key.

GeceCEO | Leader Cat

The more accessible water sources there are, the more water we consume.

Let's talk about litter boxes. How many boxes do you have?

GM Pet Sitter cat manager Gece - 3D digital illustration
GeceCEO | Leader Cat

We have two automated self-cleaning litter boxes placed in different spots.

GM Pet Sitter cat manager Merlin - 3D digital illustration
MerlinDirector of Systems

We also have one traditional manual litter box.

GM Pet Sitter cat manager Maya - 3D digital illustration
MayaDirector of R&D

Nobody has to queue up to use the litter box.

GM Pet Sitter cat manager Marla - 3D digital illustration
MarlaCreative Director

Moreover, having them in separate areas gives us options.

GM Pet Sitter cat manager Merlin - 3D digital illustration
MerlinDirector of Systems

And the most important rule of our house...

GM Pet Sitter cat manager Gece - 3D digital illustration
GeceCEO | Leader Cat

Ambushing anyone at the exit of the litter box is strictly forbidden.

GM Pet Sitter founder Tülay Kayalar Durukan and her dogs - 3D illustration
Tülay

So, what kind of litter does your mother choose for you?

GM Pet Sitter cat manager Maya - 3D digital illustration
MayaDirector of R&D

First and foremost, it must be unscented. Our noses are far more sensitive than humans'.

GM Pet Sitter cat manager Merlin - 3D digital illustration
MerlinDirector of Systems

Proper clumping is vital. It makes cleanup easier and helps preserve box hygiene.

GM Pet Sitter cat manager Gece - 3D digital illustration
GeceCEO | Leader Cat

Some litters do not clump well and get stuck between our paws.

GM Pet Sitter cat manager Marla - 3D digital illustration
MarlaCreative Director

Then we track those crumbs all over the house. That's neither comfortable for us nor clean for the home.

GM Pet Sitter cat manager Merlin - 3D digital illustration
MerlinDirector of Systems

The litter also needs to absorb bad odors efficiently.

GM Pet Sitter cat manager Mina Luna - 3D digital illustration
Mina LunaDirector of Communication

And it's not just about the litter; deep cleaning the box matters too.

GM Pet Sitter cat manager Gece - 3D digital illustration
GeceCEO | Leader Cat

Our automatic litter boxes are completely emptied and sanitized at least every 15-20 days.

GM Pet Sitter cat manager Marla - 3D digital illustration
MarlaCreative Director

Our manual box is washed weekly using water, vinegar, liquid Castilian soap, and baking soda.

Do you all sleep together?

GM Pet Sitter cat manager Maya - 3D digital illustration
MayaDirector of R&D

I sleep wherever my father is every single night.

GM Pet Sitter cat manager Mina Luna - 3D digital illustration
Mina LunaDirector of Communication

I sleep in the same bed with my mother.

GM Pet Sitter cat manager Marla - 3D digital illustration
MarlaCreative Director

I prefer to sleep on a high window perch. From there, I can watch the outside world and keep an eye on my entire family.

GM Pet Sitter cat manager Gece - 3D digital illustration
GeceCEO | Leader Cat

I like high spots too. They allow me to keep guard and enjoy my own private domain.

GM Pet Sitter cat manager Merlin - 3D digital illustration
MerlinDirector of Systems

I am a bit more of a free spirit. The circumstances of the day decide where I rest.

Which is your favorite time of the day?

GM Pet Sitter cat manager Gece - 3D digital illustration
GeceCEO | Leader Cat

Play time.

GM Pet Sitter cat manager Merlin - 3D digital illustration
MerlinDirector of Systems

Absolutely.

GM Pet Sitter cat manager Maya - 3D digital illustration
MayaDirector of R&D

Teaser wands, hunting simulations, chasing games...

GM Pet Sitter cat manager Marla - 3D digital illustration
MarlaCreative Director

Humans think it is just for fun, but for us, it is a crucial outlet for our natural hunting instincts.

GM Pet Sitter cat manager Mina Luna - 3D digital illustration
Mina LunaDirector of Communication

A tired cat is a happy cat.

GM Pet Sitter founder Tülay Kayalar Durukan and her dogs - 3D illustration
Tülay

Final question. What is the secret to living with five cats?

GM Pet Sitter cat manager Gece - 3D digital illustration
GeceCEO | Leader Cat

Not the numbers, but the structure.

GM Pet Sitter cat manager Maya - 3D digital illustration
MayaDirector of R&D

Resource sharing.

GM Pet Sitter cat manager Merlin - 3D digital illustration
MerlinDirector of Systems

Safe zones.

GM Pet Sitter cat manager Marla - 3D digital illustration
MarlaCreative Director

Play.

GM Pet Sitter cat manager Mina Luna - 3D digital illustration
Mina LunaDirector of Communication

And a human who truly understands us.

Because in multi-cat households, it is not merely about sharing the same roof. It is about making every cat feel like the master of the house.

Editor\'s Note: During this interview, no board members were awakened from their sleep, feeding rights were not violated, and all statements were approved unanimously.
